Rabbi Alex Hecht

Rabbi Alex Hecht became the rabbi of Beth Shalom Congregation in July 2021. Before coming to Scranton, Rabbi Hecht and his family lived in Toronto, Canada for three years, where he was a member of Beit Midrash Zichron Dov, a kollel and community education resource affiliated with Yeshiva University and Torah MiTzion. Through this position, Rabbi Hecht also served as the Rabbinic Assistant at the Clanton Park Synagogue. Prior to this, he received semichah (rabbinic ordination) from Yeshiva University’s Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary, as well as an M.S. in Jewish Education from the Azrieli Graduate School of Education and Administration.

 

Born and raised in Westchester, New York, Rabbi Hecht has lived in several places, including Ypsilanti, Michigan, where he served as the Director of Student Engagement at Eastern Michigan University’s Hillel; Jerusalem, where he studied at Yeshiva Darche Noam (Shapell’s); and Tucson, Arizona, where he received a B.A. in Judaic Studies and History from the University of Arizona.

 

Rabbi Hecht is married to Judith, a Speech Language Pathologist. Judith grew up in Englewood, New Jersey, studied at Sha’alvim for Women, received a bachelor’s degree from Queens College, and a master’s degree from Hunter College. She has given shiurim for women in the Toronto community, is a volunteer matchmaker for Saw You at Sinai, and is a trained kallah teacher.

 

Together, they are blessed with 3 children: Tehila, Zevy, and Eli.
